There are testable success criteria for each guideline. WCAG 2.0 contains 12 guidelines organized under 4 principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (POUR for short). This certifies it as a stable and referenceable technical standard.

This review of Button City is based on the PS5 version via a code provided by the publisher. Regardless of how adorable the protagonist and their friends may be, there’s just not enough here to hold my attention. The real issue is that it feels like its developers have relied too hard on simply being cute rather than focusing on creating engaging gameplay. Perhaps I have been rather critical of Button City there is something sweet in its cuddly art style and although its dialogue and narrative may be try-hard, it is effective at times. But all these things feel a little heavy-handed, too prescriptive unfortunately, you’re more likely to roll your eyes than say ‘aww’ when a character reveals their struggles or their feelings. Or maybe Chive will pull on your heartstrings as you discover her grandfather is suffering with dementia. You might empathise with Fennel as they struggle with loneliness as their mom constantly works long hours.

There are more than a few tender moments in Button City‘s dialogue in an attempt to make the anthropomorphic characters relatable in some way. With most of these adding little to the story, however, you can ignore them for the most part. None of them are particularly fun to play, and Prisma Beats’ insistence on using random symbols rather than actual inputs make it a complete headache to play. Outside of Gobabots, you can also play the DDR rip-off Prisma Beats, or arcade racer rEVolution Racer. There’s no sense of excitement to be found anywhere.īut there are various arcade minigames to be played – there must be a sense of excitement to be found there? Sadly, they didn’t hit the mark either. Even an espionage mission – which involves finding a disguise, putting it on, and sneaking into someone’s office – is nothing more than talking to a couple of NPCs before walking to your goal. For the most part, you’ll simply be moving from A to B, talking to characters in order to retrieve an item or some information. No quest is particularly exciting, however, with the story moving along at a pace so glacial that it’s hard to keep your attention. You’ll talk to other characters, interact with environments, and engage with various missions – some are side activities, some are related to the story. It’s about the only part of Button City that has any sort of pace to it your walking speed when you reach any one of these areas is painfully slow. A tap of the circle button will let you quickly warp from your house to the arcade, or from the park to the high street. It’s as basic as it sounds, but since one game of Gobabots never lasts more than a few minutes, it’s palatable.īetween bouts of Gobabots, you’ll spend time wandering around town – or, more aptly, warping from one area to another. You can attack opponents to steal their fruit (or to simply cause a nuisance), but you’ll mainly be attacking trees and bushes and collecting the fruit that fall from them. Initially, your time with Button City revolves around Gobabots, a rudimental multiplayer game that tasks your team with bringing more fruit to a blender than your opponent.

Despite knowing nothing about the game, Fennel joins – after all, you’ll quickly learn how to play, and making friends is more important. There, Fennel quickly meets a young group of friends who need a fourth player for their Gobabots team. Keen to make some friends, they head to the local arcade, a buzzing and vibrant place called Button City. But making your way through Button City‘s meandering story is, for the most part, a drag and spending time in its minigames – a key feature – is boring at best and frustrating at worst.īutton City puts you in the shoes (or paws) of Fennel, a fox who has just moved to a new town. It’s a shame, too, because this hyper-cutesy adventure game has all the makings of an indie darling: adorable characters, a bright, bold colour palette, and even a plot that focuses on video games, of all things. That’s the best way to describe Button City.
